When it comes to helping people in the aftermath of natural disasters, a guiding principle for MercyWorks has always been to never do for others what they can and should do for themselves.  Treating people with kindness, compassion and dignity are among our core values.  Instead of doing work such as rebuilding a home for someone, we empower them to rebuild their home.  We enlist help from communities when we are helping to feed people in a crisis situation or providing medical care.  Our goal is to come alongside and partner with people rather than doing things for people.  This prevents an entitlement mentality, preserves dignity, and forms solid long lasting partnerships.
